Auckland Chamber of Commerce head Michael Barnett noted the Government announcement saying “no” to a regional fuel tax.
The tax had potential to be distortionary, badly targeted and unfair.
“We are delighted Government has rejected it, as it takes it off the table as a funding tool for meeting Auckland’s long term transport requirements.
It creates some certainty, and demands that Auckland take the opportunity to identify more innovative long-term funding tools to address Auckland’s big transport issues.”
Mr Barnett said he hoped that now we could create a change of mind-set to increase the pace of action.
