Polish bistro owners ready to celebrate 10 years with Air New Zealand prize draw trip
Congratulations to Porirua Chamber of Commerce Members Valerie and Steve Askew, owners of New Zealand’s only Polish restaurant Topor Bistro. They have won flights to Australia with Air New Zealand in the prize draw by completing the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce Business Confidence Survey in November last year.
Val says that the win will give them a chance to celebrate their 10 year wedding anniversary - which they elected to work through last year.
“It's a little bit difficult to get time off when it's a family run restaurant with such a small staff. Last year was our 10 year wedding anniversary and we decided to work. Since winning this prize we're going to celebrate this year, so that will be lovely. We'd like to thank the Chamber of Commerce and Air New Zealand for making it possible for us to do that,” says Val.
“We are just going into our 3rd year of owning Topor, a boutique restaurant in Plimmerton, about 20 minutes from Wellington. We try to make authentic Polish and European cuisine and some dishes are infusion dishes to create beauty without sacrificing flavour. We do our best to import as many Polish beers and vodkas as we can, to enhance our customers dining experience.”
“Steve takes care of the front of house and is truly lovely with the customers and I'm the chef and run the back of house. Our 17 year old daughter also works with us as a server, so it's a bit of a family affair. “
“We have a small staff and they work incredibly hard. We're very proud of them all. Last year our 18 year old Junior Chef won the Westpac Youth Excellence Award and Topor won the Food Culture Award. “
Having finally decided where to go - Steve and Val can’t wait for the trip to Sydney using the free flights and a well- deserve break from their busy family business.
