West Auckland-based, Thomas Civil and Environmental Consultants was awarded the Supreme Business Excellence Award last night at the Westpac Auckland Business Awards 2016 – West.

“We’re involved in civil engineering and environmental engineering, planning, environmental contamination, environmental science around ecology for local government, Housing New Zealand and private clients,” explains Richard Thomas, managing director.

The West business has grown from one person to 65 staff over 16 years and is known for its friendly, efficient service across many facets of property development including lodging consents and getting them over the line.

“We’re so proud that we can do that in a short turnaround and with no questions back from Council. We really love feedback from clients, getting that pat on the back and repeat business,” adds operations manager Danielle Hancock.

Earlier in the evening, Thomas Civil and Environmental Consultants won the Excellence in Strategy & Planning category award. “Things are going according to plan. We looked at our values, we had a process of talking to team leaders, talking to and giving all staff an opportunity to feed into that. And, that fed back into the process to come up with fairly simple plans for the next three years and the next 12 months. After that, we began to look at how we implement those [plans]. And, it was amazing … to see the plan, to see things begin to work together, and to see that come to pass is quite exciting,” confirms Richard Thomas.

Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO Michael Barnett congratulates Thomas Civil and Environmental Consultants and all the Auckland West awards category winners.

Winning businesses included software development, robotics and automation company Motion Design, boutique West brewery, Black Sands Brewing Company and Josef Rakich Fitness. Other winners were Mitre 10 Mega Westgate and McDonald’s West Auckland which has introduced a new, home delivery service.

“These Awards are about our regions. Within regions, communities compete with communities and so they’re looking to provide the best availability of employees, the best conditions for the business to be successful, because if the businesses in their communities are successful then the region will be successful,” says Michael Barnett.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) – Auckland Council’s economic growth agency – partners the Chamber to present the Awards.

ATEED’s Chief Executive Brett O’Riley says: “ATEED is very proud to support these Awards, and we congratulate those businesses that were recognised for standing out in their chosen fields.

“Not only is the West renowned for its strong manufacturing presence, but 30 per cent of the economy is made up of internationally competitive and platform technology industries,” he says.

“The quality of businesses represented at the Awards are a testament to a positive future outlook for the region,” he says.

Karen Silk, Westpac GM Commercial, and Corporate & Institutional, says: “It’s been great to see all the fantastic entries in this year’s Auckland Business Excellence Awards. I know the winners are all thoroughly deserving of a win, and I’ve been impressed with the extremely high calibre of entries.

A thriving Auckland economy is fundamentally important to New Zealand’s global success and recognising the achievements of these businesses through these Awards, helps to highlight that contribution.”

The Westpac Auckland Business Awards, hosted by Auckland Chamber of Commerce with the support of ATEED, offer businesses a chance to be rewarded for their excellence, to share their stories and to celebrate their successes.
