South Auckland-based, Auckland Motorway Alliance was awarded the Supreme Business Excellence Award last night at the Westpac Auckland Business Awards 2016 - South.

For a city experiencing exponential growth and development, Auckland Motorway Alliance (made up of six different organisations) is tasked with maintaining Auckland’s motorways so that commuters can drive a safe, resilient and efficient network.

“With an average of a million trips every day by customers using the network, it’s a real challenge for us. We’re a 24/7 operation because we’ve got to do a lot of our work at night when Auckland sleeps. We have 100 people out on the network doing maintenance every night,” says Steve Mutton, Alliance Director.

Earlier in the evening, Auckland Motorway Alliance had won Excellence in Strategy & Planning and Excellence in Innovation. “Everyone that works in our organization understands their purpose. They have a belief. They know why they get up every morning, and why they go to work every night. And, that there is one common goal, to help New Zealand grow by keeping Auckland moving,” explains Steve Mutton.

Effective planning is where the rubber hits the road and innovation drives their ability to provide out-of-the-box solutions to their customer. “The New Zealand Transport Agency is our client, so we have a strategy where we focus on the five priorities that deliver value to the Agency. With customer satisfaction we’ve hit 100% three months in a row. That means we’re listening to our customer and responding to their needs. Actually this year we’ve broken four records for performance.”

Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO Michael Barnett congratulates Auckland Motorway Alliance and all the Auckland South awards category winners.

Winning businesses included Global Financial Services who are mortgage and insurance advisors, retailer Boardertown Limited, and Rayglass Boats. Other winners were Discoveries Educare, a group of 15 childcare centres across Auckland, and Chancellor Construction limited, building standalone homes and terraced townhouses.

“These Awards are about our regions. Within regions, communities compete with communities and so they’re looking to provide the best availability of employees, the best conditions for the business to be successful, because if the businesses in their communities are successful then the regions will be successful,” says Michael Barnett.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) – Auckland Council’s economic growth agency – partners the Chamber to present the Awards.

ATEED’s Chief Executive Brett O’Riley says: “ATEED is very proud to support these Awards, and we congratulate those businesses that were recognised for standing out in their chosen fields.

“Auckland South accounts for a quarter of Auckland’s GDP and also employs a quarter of the region’s workforce, representing one in four jobs.

It’s fantastic to see such a broad range of businesses in the South win awards and the positive impact that these businesses are having on their communities.

“The quality of businesses represented at the Awards are a testament to this positive future outlook for the region,” he says.

Karen Silk, Westpac GM Commercial, and Corporate & Institutional, says: “It’s been great to see all the fantastic entries in this year’s Auckland Business Excellence Awards. I know the winners are all thoroughly deserving of a win, and I’ve been impressed with the extremely high calibre of entries. A thriving Auckland economy is fundamentally important to New Zealand’s global success and recognising the achievements of these businesses through these Awards, helps to highlight that contribution.”

The Westpac Auckland Business Awards, hosted by Auckland Chamber of Commerce with the support of ATEED, offer businesses a chance to be rewarded for their excellence, to share their stories and to celebrate their successes.
