From Bias to Bullying
In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the neuroscience underpinning bias, and through discussion-based learning will be able to identify how we can recognise bias in ourselves as individuals, as well as begin to explore strategies to create change and help mitigate unconscious bias.
This will be the basis, from which we move to understand how bias can impact our actions, decisions and environments, and it’s role in influencing behaviour. This session will look at Bullying and its origins, differences and dynamics.
The workshop will cover:
- Bias at work
- Impacts of Bullying
- Personal v Task related behaviour
- Understanding the difference between Bullying and Harassment
- An introduction to the types of Bully’s that exist and the dynamics they influence
- Strategies for prevention and response to Bullying
- Understanding the complaint process
- Develop strategies to help you reflect on your own biases, judgments and thought processes
About the Facilitator:
Bev Cassidy-MacKenzie, BBS, Massey University
Bev has a very strong professional and personal interest in Diversity & Inclusion.
She was recently recognised as one of the world’s Top 50 Diversity Professionals.
She was the CEO of Diversity Works NZ (formerly the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust) from 2012-2018, an organisation originally established by the government to support businesses.
Bev has now branched out to assist businesses to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of mitigating the unconscious bias that is undermining all the great work they are doing in the area of diversity and inclusion. This fascinating and complex area is pivotal to optimising the benefits of diversity. Bev has more than 10 years’ experience in the diversity sector and has facilitated and presented hundreds of sessions, from Whangarei to Wellington, Hamilton to Hong Kong.
